Far Away: A Sasunaru Love Story

Chapter Two: The Denial

Music: Suburbia by Matthew Good Band

One Month Later…

Naruto stared up at the ceiling and counted imaginary stars for the billionth time that night. He looked over at the clock which read 3:17. It was exactly six minutes later than the last time he'd checked it. Sakura shifted slightly in her sleep next to him. She was curled up at his side, her large round belly pressing up against him. Every now and then he could feel his daughter's restless movements inside her mother. At least I'm not the only one who can't sleep, he thought.

He looked over at Sakura and studied her sleeping face. He had loved this girl for as long as he could remember. He'd loved her when they were children and she got teased for her big forehead. He always thought she was beautiful even when the other boys made fun of her. No matter how cruel she was to him in the beginning, he never gave up on her; it was his ninja way. Now she was his wife and the mother of his first child. She loved him just as fully as he had loved her all his life. And now he was in love with somebody else.

How ironic it was that just when he thought he had everything he wanted, life threw him one hell of a curveball. Although, when he thought about it he really wasn't surprised that he had fallen in love with Sasuke. Naruto always felt like Sasuke could understand him better than anyone else could. He had done just about everything in his power to try and bring Sasuke home. If the dark haired man hadn't returned when he did, Naruto would have definitely gone after him again. Not before making sure Sakura and the baby were alright though.

He was always showing up at the hospital and fussing over her to sit down, eat something, get some rest. Sakura got mad at him for his incessant hovering but he couldn't help himself. This little girl was going to be his first blood relative ever. He was going to give her the best life possible. His daughter would grow up with everything he never got. She would have love, respect, friends, family; everything Naruto had always wanted himself.

The life he had planned for his daughter did not include growing up with divorced parents; being shuffled back and forth between houses and lives. It wasn't fair to her; she didn't deserve that. Naruto was terrified of his sweet little girl ending up with the same painful childhood that he had. So he was staying with Sakura no matter what. Anything less could potentially cause his child unnecessary suffering, something Naruto was determined to prevent. He could deal with his feelings for Sasuke; at least he thought he could. However, Sasuke had been in prison for the past month and now he was getting out tomorrow; hence Naruto's insomnia.

No, he would deal with this; he was staying with Sakura. He kept repeating that to himself over and over before falling into a deep sleep; a sleep where he dreamt of warm sunny places and Sasuke's arms around him.

"Sakura for fucks sake stop nagging me! I'll do it already!" Naruto screamed at his wife who stood across from him in the living room. He'd forgotten to take to garbage out again.

"Naruto what the hell is wrong with you these days?! You're never this hostile!" she snapped back.

"First of all there's nothing fucking wrong with me and second what the hell do you know?! You think you know me so well Sakura?!"

"I know you well enough to know when something's wrong, like right now!"

"Bullshit!"

"Don't you dare walk away from me Naruto Uzumaki!"

"Could you for once just shut the fuck up and leave me alone!!"

"Naruto! Don't you dare talk to Sakura like that!"

Naruto looked up to see Iruka sensei standing in the open door glaring at him. "Oh fuck off Iruka! You don't know anything!" He stood in the middle of the room, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned completely white.

Iruka walked over to Sakura and placed a hand on her shoulder. "You get going. The girls are waiting for you. Don't worry about Naruto, I'll talk to him."

Sakura nodded silently and left. She was becoming increasingly worried about her husband. Maybe it was his impending fatherhood putting stress on him. After all, he was hovering over her constantly. If anyone could talk to him, it was Iruka. She turned and headed out the door.

As soon as she left Naruto sat on the couch and buried his face in his hands. "What the hell is wrong with you huh?" Iruka demanded. He strode over until he was standing in front of his former student, "The Naruto I know would never talk to his wife like that! I know you're about to be a father and there's a lot of stress placed on new fathers but Naruto I –"

"I'm in love with him."

Iruka stood there dumbfounded at the statement that had just come from the man he considered his son. He sat next to the blonde on the couch. "Who?" he asked. Naruto didn't answer. He raised his blonde head, tears clouding his blue eyes and resting his trembling chin on a closed fist. Iruka was at a loss. He couldn't understand what Naruto was talking about. Who was he in love with? All his life Naruto had only ever shown deep intense feelings for two people, one was Sakura and the other was………..

"Sasuke" Iruka said quietly. Naruto nodded and slumped against Iruka's shoulder. Iruka put his arm around the boy and comforted him. He wasn't the least bit surprised to learn this little bit of information, but now he could see very clearly why the young man who was like a son to him was so freaked out, and Iruka had no clue how to help out of this one.

The newly freed Sasuke Uchiha stood on the roof a building overlooking the streets of Konoha and surveyed the crowds below. He was hoping to get a glance of familiar sun kissed hair and endless blue eyes. He had been let out of prison first thing that morning. He was sure his stay would have been much, much longer but Naruto had campaigned quite passionately on his behalf and he was let off easy. Not that he deserved to be let off easy. Sasuke was quite certain that if Naruto hadn't intervened he'd most likely be spending the rest of his life in there and as far as Sasuke was concerned, he figured he deserved it after everything he'd done.

Now he didn't quite know what to do with himself. He would have preferred to stay in prison over facing a lifetime alone. Naruto's life was with Sakura not him. Sasuke had to be content with watching the blonde have a life without him. Actually the more he thought about it, the better off he believed Naruto was. Sakura was more deserving of the blonde than him anyways. After all, he was the one who had tried to murder Naruto in cold blood by slamming a Chidori right through his chest. And then he tried to run him through with a sword at Orochimaru's hideout five years ago. Both times he'd been stopped and for that he was eternally grateful. All of that just to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan. It seemed so ridiculous to Sasuke now, especially since Itachi had awakened his Mangekyo for him by killing Orochimaru.

He looked down and noticed Naruto walking with his hands shoved in his pockets and a depressed look on his face. He seemed upset about something, Sasuke hoped it wasn't serious. He didn't want Naruto to be anything but happy.

"You should have told him years ago" came a familiar voice beside him. Sasuke turned to see Kakashi standing next to him. He smiled. It was good to see his old sensei again.

"I should have done a lot of things, one of them being to listen to you."

Kakashi looked at him solemnly. "You were right about everything. You said revenge would get me nothing, and that I should learn to let things go. Unfortunately, I had to find out the hard way." Sasuke sighed.

Kakashi put a hand on his shoulder, "I'm sorry about Itachi."

"If you look up the term 'sucker' in the dictionary I guarantee you'll find my picture right beside it." Sasuke mused. He continued to watch Naruto as he headed towards an outdoor café nearby.

"You should go to him Sasuke." Kakashi said.

"And do what? Profess my undying love? Sorry, already did that, not to eager to humiliate myself again." Sasuke grumbled.

Kakashi chuckled, "Just go to him and spend time together. Even if you can't be lovers you can still be friends. Naruto still needs his best friend you know, now more than ever."

"Do you ever wish you'd told him?" Sasuke asked.

"Told who what?" Kakashi raised his visible eyebrow.

"Do you wish you'd told Obito how you felt about him?" Sasuke said.

Kakashi smiled sadly at him, "Every damn day. Now go to him Sasuke." The onyx haired man nodded at his former sensei and took off to where Naruto was.

Sakura sat at a small table outside in the shade waiting for Ino and Tenten to show up. She flipped through the menu, feeling quite hungry again even though she'd only eaten breakfast about two hours earlier. Ever since she and Ino had gotten pregnant it seemed like all the both of them ever wanted to do was eat. She decided on salad and a slice of chocolate cake before folding her menu as she waited for her friends. An orange arm wrapped around her shoulders.

"I'm an asshole, I'm sorry" Naruto said as he kissed the top of her head chastely.

"Yes you are" she smiled and hugged her husband back. "Are you really alright?" she asked.

"Yeah, yeah" he said, waving it off with his hand, "Just hormones or something like that I guess."

Sakura smirked, "I thought I was supposed to be the hormonal one." Naruto smiled at her.

"Hey Sakura, Naruto. How's everything?" said Ino as she and Tenten walked up. Tenten was pushing her and Neji's six month old son in his stroller.

"Man look at that boy! He looks more and more like his daddy everyday!" exclaimed Sakura.

Naruto pulled out Ino's chair for her so she could lower her eight month pregnant figure down to sit. "How's little Choji doing?" he asked.

"He's fine" Ino smiled.

"HE?!" Naruto cried out. Ino nodded.

"Awesome! Choji's gonna have a son!" he yelled.

"Usuratonkachi, don't yell so loudly. They can hear you all the way in Suna." Said Sasuke as he approached the group. Sakura got up and hugged him. "Sasuke Kun, I'm so glad you're out of prison."

He nodded to her and the girls, "Glad to be out" he said, keeping his eyes focused on Naruto the entire time. Naruto instantly felt uncomfortable.

Sakura smiled at them. "Alright you two, get lost. This is girl time."

Naruto gave her an exaggerated bow, "Yes your highness."

The two men headed off leaving the girls behind to enjoy their afternoon. Naruto blabbered on and made small talk while he walked with Sasuke to distract himself from how nervous he was feeling. Sasuke was still dressed in his sound clothes; black pants and sandals with a short sleeved white Gi, black arm guards, dark blue robe and purple rope belt. The only thing missing was his Kusanagi.

"So uh….where's your sword? Don't you always carry it with you?" Naruto asked, trying to sound casual and failing miserably.

"Don't need to carry it when I'm walking around town."

"Yeah but shouldn't you be carrying weapons of some sort? There are people all around who probably want you dead Sasuke. I always carry mine wherever I go."

"That's what these are for" Sasuke pulled back his arm guards to show the ink tattoos on his wrists. "I don't want to carry visible weapons and give anyone any ideas, but I'm not stupid either."

Naruto looked at the marks with his mouth agape. "Wow, cool" he said, "Where can I get tattoos like that?"

Sasuke playfully smacked him over the top of his head, "Stop staring with your mouth hanging open, you look ridiculous." He smiled warmly at Naruto. The blonde man became uncomfortable again. What he wanted to do was throw himself into Sasuke's arms and never look back but he couldn't. He just couldn't.

"Hey Naruto what's up?" yelled a voice from the terrace of a nearby restaurant. He looked over and saw Kiba, Shikamaru, Shino, Neji, and Choji all drinking sake.

"Hey guys" he said as he and Sasuke walked up, "What's going on?"

Kiba raised his glass, "We're toasting Choji! He's gonna have a boy!"

Naruto grinned and nodded, "I just saw your wife man, and she told me the good news."

Choji nodded at Naruto and clinked his glass with Kiba before downing the entire thing in one gulp. Kiba sloshed liquid everywhere making Shikamaru frown. "Kiba, you moron. The sake's supposed to go down your throat, not all over your clothes."

Sasuke looked to Shikamaru at that comment and noticed how uncomfortable he seemed to be feeling. Looks like I'm not the only one in love with someone who's married to someone else. I wonder if he's told her how he feels.

"What the fuck is this loser doing here?" snapped a drunken Kiba, bringing Sasuke's attention fully to him. Sasuke glared at him threateningly as Kiba pointed an indignant finger in his face. Naruto could feel the dangerous aura around Sasuke rising and it frightened him a lot.

"Kiba! Your mouth is talking, might wanna look to that!" hissed Naruto, hoping to shut his friend up.

"What's wrong? Am I making the prissy little stick-up-his-ass ice bitch upset?" the brunet sneered. He climbed over the small fence and stepped foreword until he was right in Sasuke's face and the two were staring each other down.

Sasuke returned Kiba's death glare with one of his own, "Got something you want to say dog boy?"

"Yeah" Kiba said, ""Quite a few things actually."

"Okay, that's enough. I'm warning you Kiba, either you shut your mouth or I'll shut it for you." Naruto hissed menacingly.

Sasuke held up his hand, "It's okay Usuratonkachi; I want to hear what this idiot has to say. Go ahead Kiba; I'm listening."

Kiba smirked, "Alright you asked for it: I hate you Uchiha. I think you're a worthless pile of rotting trash and somebody should have killed you years ago. I think it's a good thing the Uchiha clan was wiped out; they should have you sterilized so you can't reproduce and infect the world with more pain and suffering. Cause that's all you Uchiha cause. You never once saw how much suffering you caused Naruto. You say he's your best friend. I don't know who puts a Chidori through their best friend's chest; or who leaves their best friend in the condition that you did. Naruto may have the Kyuubi inside of him but you Sasuke, you're the monster not him."

Sasuke glared at him for a while before saying, "Fuck off you incompetent moron, you don't even know me or anything about my relationship with Naruto."

That was it for Kiba. He slammed his fist right into Sasuke's face and sent him flying. Sasuke rose to his feet slowly, spitting up blood before saying, "Hypocrite."

"What did you just call me?" snapped Kiba.

"You heard me you pathetic pile of garbage. I called you a hypocrite. Because that's what you are. You claim to care about Naruto now, but when we were children you and the others couldn't ever have been bothered with him. You all treated him like he was like something you scraped off the bottom of your shoe. And I haven't forgotten how excited you were to be fighting him at the chunin exams cause you thought he was a pathetic loser and you could beat him easily."

Kiba took a moment to absorb everything Sasuke had said before speaking. "Yeah, I remember. I also remember that I got my ass handed to me by Naruto and that taught me to respect him. I also decided to get to know him better and realized what an incredible person he really is. He's what I would call a real best friend, not a lying pathetic piece of scum like you."

Sasuke chuckled darkly, "So that's it. You're jealous of my relationship with him aren't you Kiba? What's the matter? Are you so pathetic that you can't find a best friend of your own so you have to steal mine?"

Kiba snarled and lunged at Sasuke. It took all five of the others to pull them apart.

"That's it! Enough both of you!" Naruto screamed and then stalked off angrily. He didn't want his friends getting into fistfights over him. Not to mention that the way Sasuke was talking about him wasn't helping his current state of mind any.

Kakashi Hatake was never one for anything romantic. It just wasn't in his nature. That said, when Iruka wanted to snuggle he'd let him, no complaints. He knew that the brunet had grown up mostly on his own after his parents died; he craved physical touch every now and then, and Kakashi made sure he would always have it.

"I'm worried about him" Kakashi said, breaking the silence between them, "Sasuke loves Naruto so much. I don't know what he'll do if they can't be together."

Iruka shifted so his head was resting on Kakashi's shoulder. "Yet another reason why Naruto needs to start telling the truth."

"What truth?" Kakashi looked down at his lover who was curled up against his side.

Iruka turned his head and looked up at him, "Sasuke's feelings for Naruto aren't entirely unrequited as it turns out."

Kakashi's eyes widened, "Are you saying what I think you're saying? Is Naruto in love with Sasuke?"

Iruka nodded, "He admitted it to me this morning. I'm really worried about him. He seems so determined to stay with Sakura because of the baby, but I can tell he's unhappy. He really needs to tell both of them the truth before it pulls him apart."

Kakashi nodded in silent agreement with Iruka and let his lover fall asleep next to him while he lay awake, trying to think of a way to help both of his students out of the mess they'd gotten themselves into.
